Installing solar panels on your home or business is an excellent way to save money while helping the environment. Before going solar, it is important to consider how to boost your solar energy production to get the most out of the system. The better your solar panels perform, the faster the array will pay for itself in savings, and the more it will decrease your reliance on fossil fuels. Follow these tips to generate as much solar electricity as possible.

Install Solar Panels in a Sunny Location

Although this sounds obvious, it is important to identify the best place for solar panels. Unfortunately, trees, buildings, and even dormers and chimneys can cause shading. Skilled solar installers can identify the best location by conducting a shade analysis. The most important window is mid-day sun, so a little early morning or early evening shade won’t have a major impact on your solar energy production. For some properties, the best location is on a garage, shop, or even a ground-mount.

Remove Solar Obstructions When Possible

In many cases, trees can significantly reduce solar system output. Although we all love trees, it is helpful to find a balance between tree canopy and solar system output. Even branch shade for deciduous trees can have a noticeable impact in the winter on solar energy production. In some cases, trimming a branch or two can have a really big impact on electricity production.

Likewise, if you have a solar system, plant trees strategically to prevent future shading. Locating trees to the north of the panels won’t cast shade on them (in the Northern Hemisphere). Keep in mind that solar systems can last for thirty years, and the tree will grow a lot during that time. Choose tree species that don’t get that tall, locate the trees further away from the panels, and avoid planting trees on the south side of the home or business.

Install Quality Solar Panels and Equipment

Not all solar panels and equipment are created equal. Unfortunately, some solar products are not reliable, resulting in the solar system producing less electricity. For example, if a string inverter fails, the solar system can stop producing power. Also, some products are better suited for shading, so it is important to select the best equipment for the job.

At SolarPlus, we are dedicated to installing quality solar panels and inverters throughout Atlanta, Georgia, and beyond. We install Tier 1 solar panels with excellent reputations and product warranties. Our extensive solar installation experience enables us to know which equipment stands the test of time. SolarPlus also offers a 10-year warranty on labor, protecting your solar investment. Our solar systems including monitoring capabilities so we can quickly detect if there is an issue and address it before it has a big impact on solar energy production. In addition, every SolarPlus project has a NABCEP-certified solar installer on the roof.
